"swaret --install gnome" works for me. I would run the following commands:
swaret --check
swaret --update
swaret --upgrade
swaret --install gnome
That way you know if swaret's up to date, it updates the package list, it updates your installed packages if there's updates, and then it will install gnome.

After re-reading your post, it looks like you either
A) Didn't open up /etc/swaret.conf.new and save it as /etc/swaret.conf
or
B) Didn't run "swaret --update" beforehand
