image restore and tar unstall scheme

I have had a system crash http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...estore-668495/ and I have a question about my backup scheme.

I have been backing up using sysrescuecd using a partition image. and I have found out that restoring that image is very easy. backing the system up is just as easy but I cannot do it automatically using crontab.

I have simplelinuxbackup and would just like to know what I would need to backup (or ignore) in order to update my current backup image with a tar backup of certain files in order to have a complete backup.

BTW I am backing up to an external hard drive.

I suggest that you look at the cp command with the update option. Update means to only back up the files which have changed since the previous backup. If you use cp -a to do your backups then the first backup will be a complete filesystem copy. Subsequent backups will be only the files which have changed since the previous backup. See:

man cp
