httpd.conf questions

I little questions about httpd.con in slack, i'm ussing only vhosts on a server for differents sites this work perfectly, i wanted to clean up my httpd.conf file & take things out i don't use

i took this away #DocumentRoot "/var/www/htdocs" without problems (since i don't have anything on this directory)

If a set a # before this <Directory "/var/www/htdocs"> i get an error when doing configtest, can someone explain this ?

Well, it is the complete markup, you have to comment :
# <Directory "/var/www/htdocs">
# ...
# ...
# ....
# </Directory>

it is normal after tedious config with apache, for my part to clarify a little httpd.conf I did :
Code:
cp httpd.conf httpd.conf.bak
perl -pi -e 's/^\s*\#(.*)$//;s/^\s+$//' httpd.conf
So without comments (and all uneeded settings, so) the file looks more clear for me
