Hey all. I am trying to print in Slack 9. I am *not* using CUPS (should I be?). I am using lp. When I boot, I see the message that the system recognises a printer on lp0, which is where it is plugged in. But whenever I try to print something (test page or otherwise) the printer doesn't respond (yes it is turned on). What should I do? I tried going to localhost:631, but I kept getting a "could not resolve hostname" message. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure why you're trying to see the printer via http://localhost:631, this is what CUPS uses, and you've said that you're not using it. If you're not using CUPS, you are probably using LPRng, which requires a valid /etc/printcap and spooling dir (use the "checkpc" utility to verify this).
root@claveybox:~# checkpc

You will probably need to setup apsfilter. Run the command /usr/share/apsfilter/SETUP. It is case sensitive. Answer the prompts and go through the menus and select your printer. It will configure the /etc/printcap and create the filters as required for your printer.
Thanks! That fixed it. Just one question: is there any way to delete the numerous printers I added in an attempt to fix them? I have like 6 that don't work!
go into the printers thingy in the KDE Control Panel -> Peripherals -> Printers and remove it there.
I had a hell of a time trying to get my HP photosmart working in Slack 9. with lp the test page would print fine. I would tell the command line program to save the configuratino, then when I tried to print anything I got a message box that took up my entire screen filled with alot of gibberish which supposedly told me what was wrong. I just installed cups, I then configured it with the KDE gui thinger and it work great!
