HP Device Manager sometimes starts
So, every time that I either log out of lxde or reboot and come back in to the WM, HP device manager is never there. The solution is usually to remove the .hplip directory and log in and out and back in around 2-3 times until it appears in my system tray. I have noticed this with LXDE and has been happening with 14.1.
After updating to 14.2 (clean install this time) - same issue - and this time it is a pure Slackware (no multilib).
So I figure it is either an issue with HP Device manager or LXDE?
Starting with the settings in HP Device manager:
And LXSession configuration and Desktop Session settings:

sorry Jeebizz, but this happens also with other desktop environments on that box?
I'm asking because I got the latest version of the packages for an LXDE desktop from SBo an here hplip starts ok in the system tray...
P.S. what is this? how do you get this configuration menu?

Well actually I am using your packages:
http://ponce.cc/slackware/slackware-14.2/lxde/
AFAIK I haven't tried other WMs/DEs yet since I am too used to LXDE.

can you please try? I guess this shouldn't be LXDE specific (as here, on multiple installations, seems to work fine)...

Ponce to answer your question, it does not start in other WMs , tried XFCE , I did see it start up in KDE.
Now that I am back in LXDE, the HP Dev icon briefly popped up in my systray, but then disappeared, so...Yea I don't know

Oh sorry
Go to preferences and click on "Default applications for LXSession"
Also I made no actual tweaks, again this is a pure 14.2 install and with your packages - not gone to multilib yet.

Maybe, but I don't know what you would have done wrong. I still am trying to figure out what could it be on my end. I just hoped I wouldn't have to keep deleting .hplip all the time to get it to show in my systray.

Also I suppose I could just wipe the entire .lxde folder and see what happens, it will just be a pain in the ass to get the customization to my liking. Still, I don't know why I would have to do that since I mentioned earlier that it did not load in XFCE either, which I never used XFCE - but it does in KDE which again I never went into until now.

the hp-systray application is launched by /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip-systray.desktop
the file has this content
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=0.6
Type=Application
Name=HP System Tray Service
GenericName=Printer Status Applet
Comment=HP System Tray Service
Exec=hp-systray -x
Icon=/usr/share/hplip/data/images/128x128/hp_logo.png
Terminal=false
Categories=Application;Utility;
X-KDE-StartupNotify=false
StartupNotify=false
should be autolaunched in every xdg-compliant desktop (LXDE, Xfce, KDE and so on).
if it's not running you can also launch it manually from a terminal with
Code:
hp-systray -x --logging=debug
and see if there's something in the output.
the options mean
Code:
Startup even if no hplip CUPS queues are present: -x or --force-startup
Set the logging level: -l<level> or --logging=<level>
can it be you have no hplip CUPS queue? have you tried reinstalling your printer under CUPS?

With or without a printer installed in cups I would think that it should not matter if it is set to always launch in the sys tray, of course it would be pointless to launch without any printers installed but again if the option is set, logically it should always load, and this is the output of the command I just ran:
Code:
slackuser@slackmachine:~$ hp-systray -x --logging=debug

error: Unable to lock /home/slackuser/.hplip/hp-systray.lock. Is hp-systray already running?
so it seems it's already running: check the process numbers
Code:
ps axu | grep hp-systray
eventually kill the processes
Code:
kill -9 3398 3407 3408
relaunch it with those same options and look again at the output.
