howto patch kernel?

I just downloaded the newest 2.4 kernel patch from kernel.org, and I can't seem to get it to run. I did a bunzip2 patch[insert silly numbers].bz2 and that worked so that I had patch[numbers blah blah] I tried to do a ./patch[blah blah] and it said "permission denied." I was doing this as root. How can I patch my kernel with this file?

Are you trying to patch a kernel that you built from source? Or are you using a standard stock Slackware kernel?

copy the patch to /usr/linux

cd to /usr/linux

as root type:
bzcat patch-2.6.1.bz2 | patch -p1

then do a make oldconfig

do regular kernel stuff....

Thanks! As it turns out, I have the latest 2.4.x kernel. I'm downloading 2.6.0 now and using the sticky thread as a guide to upgrading. Wish me luck!
