How to use new modules?

Hi!

I have compiled and installed the latest 2.6.17.8 kernel, but I suppose that the kernel is still using the old modules from 2.4.31 because I can't get direct rendering working.. I have all modules I need and my xorg.conf is a backup (I have reinstalled slackware today), so it really should be working. Direct rendering was working on the same kernel with the same xorg.conf before I reinstalled Slackware. After the first reboot it said something like:

(No new kernel modules found)

But there should be 1 new kernel module! I have checked and all modules are installed in /lib/modules/2.6.17.8.

How to make shure that I am using the new modules from 2.6.17.8?

Thanks for any help
athanatos

I can pretty much guarantee that it won't be using the 2.4.31 modules - they're a different format, so they'd refuse to load - Incorrect Version Magic, or something along those lines.
As far as the No New Modules Found goes, it always says that on mine too, yet seems happy with the new modules when I compile the kernel.

Make sure you did a make modules_install when you built the kernel - I made that mistake a few times.
lsmod will show you the ones it loaded - they will be the 2.6.17.8 ones.

As for direct rendering, I can't comment on that without more information.

if you install a new kernel, you have to re-install your video drivers for the running kernel.
