How to set my screen resolution to a better value successfully
I am a newbie for Slackware. Now, i can't change my screen resolution to the best value, for my 15" LCD, i prefer to set to 1024*768. But now, i only have two choices:800*600 and 640*480 in the display configuration dialog. That's due to my last configuration by run xorgsetup as root. So, I wanna run xorgconfig to configure it again, because xorgsetup can't resolve what i want. But, after i run xorgconfig and restart x, the desktop would not appear with a list of log, which told me that my driver didn't support 24 color depth. So, i changed the default color depth to 16, the problem still there.
My graphic card is nvidia GeForce Mx. So, i downloaded the driver from nvidia home page and installed it. I think i got the right driver program, or i couldn't install it successfully, right? But the problem hadn't be resolved, and got the same error.
How to kill the error and set my screen resolution to 1024*768? I really don't want to say such large icons and other think under current resolution.
You may also want to post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Also, you don't actually need the nvidia drivers, but if you want 3D rendering support, you may want to install them. If you cannot install them, then we can help, just say that you want to install them and where it goes wrong.
Also you should check if you downloaded the right version of driver. The latest version 173.14.12 don't support your video card anymore. I think the latest proper driver version for your card is 96.43.07 (check http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us).
as Road_map said, my right graphic card driver version is 96.43.07. Of course i had installed it successfully. But i didn't know the problem was. I searched for some other ideas about installing NVIDIA_GLX...(i forgot its real name, but it started as this), i downloaded the source code and compiled it. But after i installed the NVIDIA_GLX..., my desktop would not appear again, no matter the 800*600 resolution, but gave me a whole black screen, nothing to do, no error message. For me, a beginner of slackware(for linux too), i had no idea for this. so, i have to install my slackware system again. This time, after i installed the new system, my desktop didn't appear but with some errors too. Then, i installed the driver(96.43.07) immediately, (the driver said it would configure my x for me, i accepted it), and restarted x, ok, my kde desktop appear with a 1024*768 resolution very well. Bingo!
Thanks, all
I don't know what's the problem seat.
When i installed my slackware, my desktop wouldn't appear, only when i used xorgsetup, but the resolution only had two choice,800*600 and 640*480.
This time, it works now.
No need xorgsetup nor xorgconfig.
The difference is, i installed the video card driver immediately when my desktop couldn't appear. So strange.
