How do I install a package?

As you may have seen in my other thread, "Could not start Kdeinit. Check your installation." I am having trouble getting KDE to work. I believe the problem is that I do not have the package kdelibs, or it didn't get installed properly. so, I have gotten that package from the KDE website, put it on a floppy, and I'm trying to install it. Problem is, I don't know where to start. I tried pkgtool, and that just shot me back out to the console prompt after I ok'ed the install.

Thanks for any help you have,
Cam

you can always move the file, if that doesn't work. make sure you are root to remove/install/upgrade packages.

cd /mnt/floppy
cp packagename.tgz ~
cd ~
installpkg pkgname.tgz

you may want to use pkgtool first to see if you have the package already installed, and if so you should use upgradepkg pkgname.tgz instead of installpkg.

Of course !! you'll have to mount your floppy disk !
(mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy)

You can also use pkgtool : it's a nice "graphical-tool" for slack's package :-)

If you need this package get it from the slackware site you downloaded your iso from.

then it will install in the correct directory and will be the right version
I also think you should remove the original package with removepkg
first, then installpkg
