Himem Enabled Kernel

I may have found a bit of truth in finding out where a problem of mine lies. For a while I was confused why the amount of memory that the "free" utility said that I had available in my computer was several hundred MB less than the amount that I know I have installed in my computer. Well I was looking in the /var/log/dmesg file and I noticed near the top of the file and it said that I need to use a HIMEM enabled kernel rather than the bare.i one that I am using (from the slackware 10.2 ISOs). I was curious, does anyone know if the huge26 kernel will have support for HIMEM built in, or if I will have to wait until I compile my own kernel at some point after I install the new system?

Also, it mentions something about zones 1, 2, and 3 having different numbers of pages of memory available. What I have reported for zone 1 is much smaller than what is reported for zone 2 (4096 and 225280 respectively), is something needed to have these two numbers read the same as the physical pieces of memory are the same size, both are 512 MB?

P.S. This post is not asking about the Slackware 11 distro that is expected soon, but about the huge26 kernel that is part of it. So I do not see any need to have this as part of the huge thread about its release.

Can't answer the Slack specific questions as I no longer use it, but basically you can ignore the "zones". Nothing to do (well, at a high view anyway) with the number of RAM chips you have, and the total size.
Memory zones are a Linux virtual storage concept - knew I'd seen a couple of articles on the web.
Try this. The numbers you are seeing are page counts BTW.
