Higher Resolution, What am I doing wrong!


I want a higher resolution but cannot figure out how to go above 1024x768. Here is the relevant section of my xorg config file:

As you can see, color depth of 24 is set to 1280x1024 and the default color depth is 24. So what gives? I looked in kcontrol and those setting for my monitor are not set to enable at kde startup. Thanks.

You need to use a driver other than vesa. If you have an nVidia card you can download and run the NVIDIA-INSTALLER and then modify the xorg.conf accordingly or you can change Driver "vesa" to nv.
As for ATI, I can't remeber as I don't own anything with an ati card.

EDIT: Also, you can run xorgconfig instead if you want, that seems to be a simple solution for some. =/

I'm using the nvidia driver from nvidia.com, and I changed the driver from 'vesa' to 'nvidia' in the video card setting. Maybe I'll try using xorgconfig and see if that helps. I'm always a little intimidated using that though. Is there a good place to find out information about my monitor? I'm never sure what to answer. I have a Dell e177a 17'' crt.

What gives is your HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges aren't correct. I don't know what they are supposed to be, though, and I don't think you even posted that part of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

I agree with BrianW and aysiu in that you need to change the driver to nv and update your HorizSync and VertRefresh ranges. I have SuSE installed and the driver is set to nv. For some reason Slackware always set the driver to vesa. Even with my old ATI card. I have just downloaded the latest driver from nVidia and I am planning to test it later today.

Ok, I RTFMed and the slackbook said I should use SuperProbe to find out the info I need to complete the xorgconfig script. Only problem is 'SuperProbe' is not found, so I don't seem to have it installed, nor do I have 'xorgconfig'. I thought xorgconfig was a slackware specific script. So why can't I find it? It was always there on past versions.

Xorg will start with the highest resolution possible for your settings. Eg 1600 x 1200

You need to update your monitor settings. You have the default setting from the Slackware installation:

Also I am not sure if the following is correct:

You might goto http://support.dell.com/support/syst...t=3&~subcat=50
and look for your monitor's actuall specifications. I don't see an e177a listed there.
