Unhappy HELP:Problems about Update kernel 2.6.10

I have a problem about kernel update. Now I use slackware 10.2 (2.4.31).

And I want to update to 2.6.10. So I download the kernel and Patrick's

excellent configuration file: config-2.6.10 .

Then according to the steps:

make mrproper
make menuconfig
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

/usr/src/linux# cp System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.10
/usr/src/linux# cp .config /boot/config-2.6.10
/usr/src/linux# cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10

Also I modifed the lilo.conf. And add the new links to the files. But when I

boot to the new kernel it has a problem :" kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:

Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,12)." What that mean? I

have already built in support for the filesystem when I do "make

menuconfig",and not as a module. So anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!

The issue may lie in your lilo.conf. It looks like you are trying to boot off of something way down the list of drives. If I remember correctly you should point lilo at your root partition and not your boot partition.

Why don't you use "xushis tutorial" The Slackware Guide to installing Kernel 2.6 at http://xushi.co.uk/guides/kernel.php or "shilos" This is how I do it all at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=174447 or Roberto Ostinellis tutorial at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...icle&artid=408 ?

I self have followed "xushis" tutorial many times without problems!

And maybe this helps

Hello AK prince
I hav useed this guide it works ok.
There are to things that you need to do
1. If you use reiserfs you must biuld it in the kernel not as a module.
2. you need to add your root patiton , i think you hav cd from his.
look at the lilo.conf and cd to your new one
I hav made this n00b thing to.

If you use reiserfs...

Code:
mkinitrd -c -k 2.6.10 -m reiserfs
and the modify /etc/lilo.conf
Code:
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz-generic-2.6.13
initrd = /boot/initrd.gz
root = /dev/hda6
label = Lnx2613
read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends

Thanks all of you guys. I found my problem. The issue

lied in my lilo.conf. This is a port of my lilo.conf " image

= /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.10" . But I had already made a link

symbol "vmlinuz" to vmlinuz-2.6.10. So when I changed

the part to "image = /boot/vmlinuz". The system works

OK. Many thanks for all of you guys again.
