Is this being read from disk? If not, you should try downloading and then running.
Not compiling a kernel at the same time? Have you ample memory or are we swapping out all the time?
What Slackware version are you using? Hardware h264 acceleration is not enabled by default in 14.1 (although, I think with the changes in -current most AMD and Intel cards should work and Nvidia cards should work after installing the binary driver). (Looks like Eric's VLC includes libva and vdpau) What video card do you have? If it is nvidia, did you install the binary drivers?
Your ability to play HD videos depends mostly on your graphics card and associated memory throughput (more of a problem on Atom systems). As such, do post more details about your system and about the video, such as the resolution of this video, the bitrate, etc.

Thank you for your answers.
I don't really know why but I thought since it worked on debian, something must have gone wrong during the install.
I downloaded the 14.1 DVD iso again and DD it onto a USB key... Installed everything from the USB stick, added vlc from alienbob and everything works.
It must have been some libraries that went missing, making me enable to play HD video. Or some problems with the driver... Guess a fresh install is sometimes a good call.
Thank you very much for your time.
( now I also see that OpenGL had problems on my first install because I couldn't use it within KDE.
