Avidemux is better than VirtualDub (windows). I've got 2.5.2 working using alien's slackbuild script. Also used alien's script for x264, ffmpeg, avidemux. All other dependency from SBo. Building this way will enable all features & plugins for avidemux. BTW, avidemux is available as a GTK and QT4 app.

If you use avisynth (windows), enable multilib as per alien's instructions (if using slackware64), install wine, avisynth-win, avidemux-win 2.5.2 and use avsproxy_gui.exe (located in avidemux-win folder) to connect to avidemux-linux.

Nutshell : copy these into avisynth plugins folder, detail instructions in link below
ffms2.dll FFmpegSource2
avss.dll Matroska Splitter
dgdecode.dll DGIndex
DGAVCDecode.dll DGAVCIndex
NicAudio.dll

Configuring avsproxy_gui, but use the avsproxy_gui from avidemux-win 2.5.2

This setup allows almost all dvdrip/frameserving/encoding apps from windows to be fully operable in slackware wine, e.g.
- DVD Decrypter, configure in winecfg as winnt40 app, auto-detect dvd-drive before ripping the dvd
- DGIndex
- AviSynth & various plugins
- BeLight

dvdstyler is a nice dvd-authoring app available from SBo.

It is A LOT more convenient to cut those files before encoding. If you get mpeg2 streams from your tv device, dvbcut is your friend. http://dvbcut.sourceforge.net/
