Google Earth 4.3 crashes X
I've very recently upgraded my slack desktop from version 11.0 to 12.1
The new install seems to work very well and I'm overall very pleased with it.
Then I re-installed the latest Google Earth and ........ no fun anymore!
The install seemed to go well, no error messages that I recall, but launching it brings up the initialization window, and then locks up X.
Hard lockup too, black screen - no keys work, have to reboot by turning the power off.
I have been searching around for something obvious but I'm not finding much that seems pertinent.
I have read about having OpenGL drivers and xorg configured, but I'm not sure how to check that.
Last thing I checked was glxgears to see if that was Ok, and no it isn't I get "glXCreateContext failed"
I have the Nvidia driver installed, and X still seems to run Ok otherwise.
I did install swfdec last night which I haven't done before. I used SlackBuild packages and took care of dependencies as needed. Firefox plugins show them installed and working. I wonder if that's affecting this?
I'll put up any other revelent info as asked.
Don't know where to go from here though.
The first place to check would be log files.
There may be nothing pertinent in them, but then again, maybe there is.

Ok, thanks for taking a look though raconteur.
I do know about not posting hardware info - and I'll have to look through that file a little closer.
I guess it seemed mildly humorous to me to be posting memory address's from a video card.
Hacking that could really give someone a headache...........
I'm thinking the OpenGL driver thing might be where I'm headed.
I did see some similar posts from folks running other distro's and I'll have to take a closer look at some of them.
If my memory serves me correctly (which it may not), Google Earth absolutely requires that DRI is enabled. Your X log doesn't suggest that it is, but to check definitively to make sure that is the cause, what is the output of the following command:
Code:
$ glxinfo | grep direct
It *should* say "direct rendering: Yes". However, if it says, no, you must get DRI up and running before you can use Google Earth. You mentioned the nVidia drivers; I'm assuming these are the proprietary drivers. Which version are you using, and how did you install the drivers? What model is your video card? Looking through your log, it suggests reinstalling your nVidia drivers if DRI is not enabled (which I believe is the case). You may wish to try that.

Here's the output -
<machine_name>~$ glxinfo | grep direct
Error: glXCreateContext failed
I was asking around a bit about from local folks I know and the popular opinion seems to be that OpenGL must be working for Google Earth.
The Error above prints on any glx check I've done so far, not so big a deal really, I'm curious though.
The rest of the desktop works without issues (well the taskbar lock up thing, but that's a three year old bug now on KDE).
I just wonder if I didn't kill GLx with the swfdec install. I haven't been able to find much info on that yet.
My Nvidia X-server settings give no hint about DRI. The help window shows me the page where it should be, but has no specs there.

Reason: missing info
Reinstall the Nvidia driver, as suggested in the log:
Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
(EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
(EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
(EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.
Also, There are other reports of Google Earth crashing X (+ solution), read this.
