Gnome Sound Events not working.

I go to Applications > Desktop Preferences > Sound and I check the "Enable sound server startup" and then the "Sounds for events" boxes. Log off then log back on and I hear the event for logon. After that I hear no sounds until I log off again. I will hear the correct sound when I click ok to log off then I hear the log off sound. In the sound prefs I also can't hear the wav files if I click play them. Esd is running, and esdplay will play the files in console. The last time I can remember them working is before I installed alsa, but that was a long time ago so I can't remember. Oh and even with new user and as root it does the same thing. AFAIK everything else works.
