I updated this install last February, and everything (but I mean EVERYTHING) worked, geeqie included.
Now I have a thread going about pulse, because my microphone vanished leaving me like a wallflower on Zoom. And, after working, geeqie started misbehaving.
I am a believer in Rule '1: "If it works, don't fix it!" I did fiddle with pulse, to try and get off my sucky laptop speakers, but I wonder why the config changed, or is something going on I don't know about.
Sorry to resurrect this thread, but Geeqie is at it again. I boot it:
plain 'geeqie' comes up and responds, but I can't adjust side window size from the woefully wrong defaults. It is pure punishment to use.
Geeqie -r (default) boots, loads 2/3 of some pic and stops, 100% unresponsive. Eventually I get a message that a script has gone out to lunch, and do I want to stop it? I take the opportunity to quit.
~/.config/geeqie/ only has an empty layouts subdir and a socket called .command= which resists all efforts to delete it. Removing the direcory produces no change
Personally, I want out. To judge by the threads, it's being 'maintained' by some Sorcerer's Apprentice at best. Can anyone recommend a useful lightweight picture viewer for someone without gnome or kde who wants to stay that way? The fewer dependencies the better.

Distribution: Slackware64 15.0 (started with 13.37). Testing -current in a spare partition.

Itīs working ok here, both running "geeqie" from terminal or clicking the icon from Xfce Graphics menu.
Geeqie shows all image types I have in ~/Pictures, jpg, bmp, png, gif, pnm (scan from sane), even an pdf (but only the first page).
Yes, that fits the bill. It was the quickest slackbuild ever to compile. That being said, 1.0pre2 is probably a bit previous for the version number. It's efficient, and spartan, but it will be something if he/they put any flesh on the bones.
So I will watch and wait, in the hope that one of them becomes more satisfactory in the future. The rendering is nice on mirage, whatever defaults they have seem to work well.
Geeqie may stop crashing, or mirage may improve features wise (e.g. incorporate the keyboard or automatically display). I will revisit this soon.
It will do, until geeqie improves. Mind you, geeqie wasn't all that great anyhow. I tried the latest current, and it's the same. It comes up, 2/3 renders the first image (png or jpg) and goes out to lunch on some script. When it finally offers me the choice to quit I'm a fool not to take it. geeqie-1.6-x86_64-3 is no better than geeqie-1.6-x86_64-2, fwiw.
I may try compiling source against my library versions just in case.
