GCC error compiling vlc

Locally compiling vlc in an effort to make it live with mesa-17.x, but it pukes thusly
Code:
/usr/include/qt5/QtCore/qcompilerdetection.h:562:6: error: #error Qt requires a C++11 compiler and
yours does not seem to be that.
 # error Qt requires a C++11 compiler and yours does not seem to be that.
I'm on gcc-5.3.0. What do I need?
Code:
/var/log/packages/gcc-5.3.0-x86_64-3	       /var/log/packages/gcc-gnat-5.3.0-x86_64-3
/var/log/packages/gcc-g++-5.3.0-x86_64-3       /var/log/packages/gcc-go-5.3.0-x86_64-3
/var/log/packages/gcc-gfortran-5.3.0-x86_64-3  /var/log/packages/gcc-java-5.3.0-x86_64-3
/var/log/packages/gcc-objc-5.3.0-x86_64-3      /var/log/packages/gccmakedep-1.0.3-noarch-1

have you by any chance installed some packages from the current tree? packages for current shouldn't be installed on stable because most of the times the toolchain and dependencies used for building them are different from the one on stable.
if you have done it, please restore the 14.2 versions or, if you really want to use newer versions of these packages, build them on stable: notice that in this second case you most probably will navigate into uncharted territories as your setup won't be the one on which the build script have been tested.

Yes, I had to install mesa to get firefox working, and everything else acted up.

The writing is on the wall for me, so I'm upgrading to current as I write. No handy fix. That upgrade is probably going to break loads more stuff, but I don't really care. I've resigned myself to a period of suffering. I have a lot of Alien, SBo, & personally made packages. I'd rather fight them with the base solid than fight the base.

/Sigh
