Fresh 10.2, tweeked kernel, no NIC after

Topic pretty much says it all, installed a fresh 10.2, 2.4.31 kernel, tweeked it to my liking, followed all instructions on installing and applying changed in lilo, boots fine, everything works now except my nic which was working before the recompile. I tried ifconfig eth0 up and it tells me no such device. What did I do wrong?

Did you compile NIC support directly into the kernel OR as a module??

I didn't even touch the NIC section because it was working properly before I messed with the kernel.
