Fluxbox Non-English

Hi there,

I would like to setup Fluxbox for a non-English, in this case German, environment. But I'd like to have the command line in terminal windows in English. With my attempts so far, either everything including command line error messages is in German, or nothing. Can anyone of you, please, provide a hint, what's the best way to solve this?

In /etc/profile.d/language.* I set all locale variables to UTF-8.

/etc/profile.d/lang.sh:
Code:
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LC_COLLATE=C
Now, to get German menus in Fluxbox I created a ~/.profile and added these two exports to it:

~/.profile:
Code:
export LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=de_DE.UTF-8
As I said, now everthing is in German for the given user, including command line error messages. How can I get a German desktop, but with US English command line?

Thanks in advance, regards

gargamel

Well you are luckier than me as I had write the Maltese Translation myself :-).

I would try by reverting /etc/profile/lang.sh to the original entries. If you are using bash, then enter the German LANG and LANGUAGE in ~/.bash_profile. If it does not work, rm -rf .fluxbox and log out and in again, try also fluxbox-generate-menu.

A workaround should be to change the menu link/keyboard shortcut you're using to launch your terminals from (example for xterm):
Code:
xterm
to
Code:
LANG=en_US.utf8 xterm

OT: Isn't Malta the place, where every language there is on this side of Andromeda is spoken, plus 1?
Seriously: I want to go there, someday, since I saw a couple of documentary films on it. Very interesting place, I think!

/etc/profile/lang.* are set to US English with UTF-8.
The language setting in ~./profile are applied, so no need to copy them to ./.bash_profile, I think. Also, menus are in German, as desired. Actually, everything is in German, with a few exceptions, where the Fluxbox localisation is incomplete.
However, I want one exception to the rule. If I run a terminal window, such as rxvt, xterm or konsole, everything is in German, too. Unfortunately, this includes even command line error messages, which I do NOT want.

Regards,

gargamel

Thanks, this obviously does the trick, but it would be necessary to do it for all terminal programs. Works, though...

Yes we tend to be multi-lingual. I agree that Malta is "interesting", wihtout delving on the exact definition of the word. Anyway, I like it here.
