Firefox 29 plugins and Slackware

Hi:

I have been trying to install add on's all week long with no dice.

My system is up to date and I did a complete update and a full upgrade with success yesterday and installed the new Mozilla Firefox.

I haven't been able to install add on's since I installed Slackware 2 weeks ago and updating/upgrading doesn't aid any of the installation methods of add on's for Firefox's functionality.

When I try to install Ghostery or Video Download Helper I get:
Code:
! There was error downloading Ghostery try again-
Trying again does not work.
Here's the error and the Mozilla Add On page in all text mode only.

http://s1052.photobucket.com/user/Ul...tOnly.png.html

I reset Firefox, no joy, made no difference.

I read that sometimes graphics cards can prevent plugins from installing or working. So...
I unchecked the box that says use hardware acceleration when available.

I can't run Firefox in safe mode because that option is only available with add on's disabled and I don't have any to begin with.

I can't use Konqueror because that browser consistently crashes when I use it.

How can I get Firefox's add on's installed?

Could it be that Slackware needs a pkg or a dependency?

This is really furstrating:-
Thanks in advance.

I'd bet it has nothing to do with missing Slackware dependencies as Ghostery is just a collection of javascripts and json data files. Ghostery 5.2.1 runs fine on FF 29.0 for me (unlike other incompatible plugins).

It seems like a network or plugin fetcher issue - either the xpi resource is temporarily unavailable or the plugin is partially downloaded and fetcher fails to resume to complete.

Did you try to install directly from mozilla's page latest Ghostery ?

Yes

I'm thinking about re-installing Slackware.
That might solve the problem.

What do you think?

Re-installing Slackware will only help if Slackware is causing the issue in the first place. Some questions:
- Which version of Slackware?
- Where did you get the Firefox 29 package and how did you install it?

Version 41.1 Slackware 64 for x86_64 is what I just recently downloaded.(torrent)

The version of Slackware that is installed at the moment is Version 14.1 Slackware 32-bit.
Yesterday I ran:
Code:
slackpkg update
slackpkg install-new
slackpkg upgrade all
slackpkg clean-system
Firefox cam directly from the mirror that I have uncommented.
It's http://mirror.us.kernel.org/slackware/slackware-current

I think that testing a fresh installation in a VM might accomplish the same thing.

Have you tried moving your Firefox profile folder? I find the odd problem with Firefox now and again and starting a new profile tends to solve it -- though of course some preferences can be lost in doing that. Seems faster and easier than a new Slackware install though.

No I haven't tried moving that profile folder.
I'll have to look into that; as I'm not sure where that folder is; 273-

I'll re-install if all else fails-

As with the others, I can't see much point in reinstalling

If you're concerned about making a new profile - instead just create a new user, log in as that user and see if the problem persists.

It's probably quickest to just move the ~/.mozilla directory but you could just move the directory under ~/.mozilla/firefox/ which is named with random characters as that's where your profile information is stored.

I think I found the problem.
I looked in my home directory and the only things that are in there is a ftp file (that is empty) and the current users home directory.
I do not have a mozilla directory or folder--

But when I check in the terminal it's in:
Quote:
bash-4.3$ whereis mozilla
mozilla: /usr/bin/mozilla /usr/lib/mozilla /usr/X11R6/bin/mozilla /usr/bin/X11/mozilla /usr/X11/bin/mozilla

Are you sure you're not looking in /home instead of /home/ztcoracat for the folder?

Yes.
I looked in /home/ztcorcat and the folder does not exist--

Do I need to create a Mozilla folder?

This does not make sense. Can you just download whole xpi file somewhere in your home dir ? Then try install Ghostery plugin directly from that file - there is a menu option beside plugins search field on plugins manager pane.
Would it also throw download error ??
