Failing hard drive? hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 etc etc

I am getting these errors on an older box:

hda: dma_intr: status = 0x51 {Drive Ready SeekComplete Error}
hda: dma_intr: error = 0x84 {DriveStatusError BadCRC }
failed opcode was: unknown
</snip>

Any hints here? Is this drive heading south or is this error somewhat trivial?

Oh, I'm running Slack 12.0 on an AMD Athlon 3600.

I've found a similar thread. Same errors, possibly another issue, however.

Backup your data, run a 'smartctl -t long /dev/sda' and wait for it to finish, then post 'smartctl -a /dev/sda'.
