Evolution

I've just installed evolution 1.4.4 by rpm2tgz of rpm packages from mandrake.

If I start evolution from a terminal program i get the following errors -

(evolution:633): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(evolution:633): Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers

(evolution:633): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: gsignal.c:2010: instance `0x87392e8' has no han dler with id `11096'

(evolution:633): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: gsignal.c:2010: instance `0x878b550' has no han dler with id `11823'

These errors don't seem to effect me I can send messages, receive them and spell check. Checked $LANG it was set to C $LC_ADDRESS was set to nothing. Chancing my luck I set them all to en_GB in a script and exported them. Ran out of luck - didn't work.

Can anyone give me some pointers.

Thanks

AK

Well what distro are you running? Slack?? If so, follow moonloader's advice. I can use Evolution as a side effect of using Dropline http://www.dropline.net/gnome/ and would recommend it highly. -- J.W.

I tried installing evolution 1.5 before 1.4.4. Worked through the dependencies until all evolution would do when starting at the command line was abend with "illegal instruction" - helpful!

From what I've learnt it would appear that maybe playing around with xfree86 might clear the problem. However, my machines slow so I try to use pre-compiled code. I guess tailor making xfree86 for my machine would take a couple of days.

When I upgrade my machine I will have another look.

Thanks for your help.

Continued with evolution 1.4.4.

Googled and played around with the variables $LC_ALL etc setting them to amongst other things en_GB. Also noted that the files locale.dir and locale.alias didn't exist in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale. All to no avail.

Checked out http://www.xfree86.org for the nth time and noticed that a 4.4 release was available for XFree86 in tgz for Slackware. I was on 4.3.

I couldn't decide the best way to install them other than I wanted a clean install so I opted for, don't frown, the following.

removing all the XFree86 packages using pkgtool.
renaming the directories usr/X11, usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11

after which things like mozilla wouldn't start.

Used installpkg to install all the XFree 4.4 packages.

mozilla now worked.

I rebooted the machine to ensure that even after a reboot kde and mozilla still worked.

Success so far then tried evolution at the command line, it loaded cleanly WITHOUT the errors that had existed when running under XFree86 4.3

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

maybe because I was running slackware using a magazine CD it had been so cut down to fit on one CD that some elements were missing and If I had just reinstalled XFree 4.3 I would have got the same successful result.
