Even after compiling a new kernel I still get this problem

Well I've tried everything I know how to do. My wireless card says that it is unsupported in the klaptop thing, but it seems like it recognizes it on boot. I know I included support for the card type in my kernel too ;(. Does anyone know how to fix it. If not does anyone know how to install a patch? I know there is a patch for the driver I just need to know how to install one.

**edit: I'm running slack 9.0 on a Gateway 400SP laptop and the card is a Proxim Orinoco 802.11b Gold pcmcia card**

TY in advance as always and please help

patch -p1 < /path/to/patchfile.extention
