esound not able to open /dev/snd devices

Folks---

I'm trying to figure out a little issue that's been bothering me for a while. It seems to me that it should be a simple config issue, however...

Alsa is installed and running, and command line MP3 players (amp, mpg123, madplay) as well as xmms work perfectly. Whenever I try to play a gnome game, however, the following pops up on stderr:

Audio device open for 44.1Khz, stereo, 16 bit failed
Trying 44.1Khz, 8 bit stereo
[go down the list of sample/bit rates and stereo vs. mono]
Sound device inadequate for Esound. Fatal.

I am using an ES1868 Plug And Play AudioDrive.

Thanks,

Henry

Hi,

It looks like the Esound daemon is trying to use OSS. Since you are using ALSA, you will need to configure Esound to use ALSA. Or use the OSS compatibility modules (which can come in handy for a few commercial games).

To configure the Esound daemon to use ALSA you will need to read the documentation because I prefer to use KDE and arts and thus have no idea about configuring it.

WRT the OSS compatibility, it is the snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss modules which need to be loaded and (depending on your system) appripriate device nodes need to be made.

HTH,

Emu

Does that mean I need to recompile the blessed thing? Not that I mind doing it, it's just that it takes forever on my ancient Pentium 200 MMX.

In any case, I perused what docs I could find concerning configuring EsounD, and could find nothing that seemed to help. If someone could point me in a direction towards necessary materials, I would be eternally greatful...

Thanks,

Henry

Try downloading and compiling the latest version (0.2.34). It seems to handle alsa with no configuration tweaking.

I think some of the older versions needed a patch to run with alsa?
