Dumb, TTFs
Okay, it's two years i'm using Slackware, and i never had a big problem with blocky fonts, well, in openoffice they are terrible, but in the rest of the apps i can bear with them fine. However lately i'm reading a lot about how great TTFs are and i decided to put them on, just to see the difference.
I read about 7 different HOW-TOs and tutorials at tldp, the register, some italian sites, etc.. and they all say basically the same things, so i grabbed some TTF's put them in a nice location such as /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype, downloaded mkfontdir from a link Aussie posted in one of the OLD posts, but it miserably fails to compile, even after i edited the Makefile to make sure it can find my libttf.so.
Here is the pathetic attempt at compilation:
|:-(Wed Dec 11 17:51:06)-(root@SlackBox:~)# make gcc -Wall -pedantic -I/usr/lib/libttf.so/lib -c -o ttmkfdir.o ttmkfdir.c
ttmkfdir.c:64: freetype.h: No such file or directory
make: *** [ttmkfdir.o] Error 1
Does this mean i need to download and install freetype as well? Isn't this installed in default slack install (slack 8.1)? I'm lost...
So, my question is, is there a binary of ttmkfdir? Or any workaround to compile it on Slack?
Then i noticed i don't have xfs, the X font server running by default. Is this necessary?
In other words, can someone just give me a brief overview of what i need to do to get TTF's on a slackware system, since most Docs i read seem to be aiming at more GUI oriented distros with xfs.
Thanks you so much...

I dont know how to get ttf's in all applications but . .
if you are using KDE then you at least get some nice fonts (antialiased) works out of the box in slack 8.1
Another suggestion to get a nice desktop is to install dropline-gnome , http://www.linuxpackages.net/ amongst other things they supply you with mozilla 1.2.1 with anialiased fonts !
It seems that there is not a standard way to render fonts in linux, (how long time do we have to wait . .)
NSKL:
I can remeber I have installed TTF as sson as had Linux, I copied all my winbloze fonts to /mnt/win/some_dir => Opened KDE control center ==>
System ==> Font Installer. There I have chosen the directory where my TTF's where, and pushed the installe button, everything went smoothly. And now I use only one font: Times New Roman. Everywhere in Opera, Openoffice, All gnome and KDe progs are marvelous Well maybe I am out of theme, but I couldn't understand why haven't you went the same way as I made?????

I will try your tip Nautilus, thanks. I also upgraded to the latest Fluxbox today, since i hosed my old one, and thought, what the hell, i'll just get the newest version insted of fixing the old one. And the new version has a Antialiasing option in configuration submenu, i clicked it... and,....
Whoah, all the fonts were beautiful, but everything became HUGE, for some reason, so i just switched back to normal...

Its 1.14 now, and yes, i overheard a convo on #fluxbox where someone said it does support the "remember patch"
HTH
BTW, i screwed all my fonts up Hope new Slack will come out soon, cuz as of now my fonts are worse then ever...
-NSKL
uhhhhhhhh...... NSKL and you don't know how to undo changes? It is a pitty thast you made a font installation in unnormal way I dont want to offer system reinstallation.... but font thing really sux. You know my freind also had lots of problems with fonts. thnx GOD I don't have any.
BTW, I have configured my system to use russian locale adn all my programs are in russian language, cool.
NSKL how is new flux? does it works faster or slower? and of course if it supports "remeber" thing I will intall it!
BTH I have found all cyberpunk books in english and russian translation.
There are: Dune, Neuromancer a lot of stories and....... War Games - the book film Hackerz was based on!!! thnx to russian internet, I think it is the biggest one (because you can find everything there) after english inet

Heh, i understand some russian, but not enough to read and comprehend a book.
New Flux works great, and has the cool new antialias option, but it still doesn't work too good, so i just keep it off. Also, it seems all support for us with dualheads was removed (or i missed a configure flag when compiling) because i can't specify "onhead:" option anymore (in config file) and it doesn't appear in popup menu (for the slit for example) anymore, which really sucks cuz i cant specify on which head i want the slit on anymore... Otherwise it's fast and overall very stable, like the previous releases.
I was thinking of trying something new however, maybe waimea, or sawfish... i just don't have time to configure them..
So i'll stay with Flux for now, it does everything i need, until E 0.17 comes out... but i dont think that will be anytime soon.
Oh yeah, i fixed most of my fonts as well, except in Opera, they still suck big time, especially when i'm looking at LQ... most other sites display fine.. maybe it's something with LQ?
NSKL what version of Opera are u using? 6.03 or the latest 6.10?
Cause the latest one has absolutely no problem with fonts; a friend of ine had so ugly fonts in 6.03 but the new Opera, now supports antialiasing and he's fonts where just beautiful!
BTW, I think I'll use flyxbox for a long time, and I'll also use it when I'll have supper great machine, I just like it, especially with mine configured Matrix skin ( on gkrellm to) and with this background: http://img.hebus.com/cinema/matrix/matrix_027.jpg and systemx style!
I also have a green skin on all gnome programs and KDE .
NKSL if you want to read some cyberpunk books in english go to:
project.cyberpunk.ru or lib.ru ( enter Dune, and read it!)

Hey, i didnt know new opera was out, im still on 6.03, but i'll go download the new one right away.
Nice desktop, but that background is too "busy" for me, it deconentrates, BTW if you want some nice things to replace gkrellm check out dockapps, you can put them in the slit in fluxbox, very neat.
Here is the my screenshot, with a custom theme i made, but i also installed artwiz fonts and cleaned up the menus so it looks better than on that screenshot. http://www.geocities.com/nskl86/desko.jpeg
I also packaged my theme to submit it to freshmeat or somewhere, so if you want it let me know and i'll send it to you.
Thanks for the links to the books, i'll read as soon as i get some time (gotta study for exams this week) and when i finish the bash scripting how to i started..
Thanks again

I would be glad to get your style! BTw the link you gave doesn't work....
NSKL have you heard about LM_SENSORS plugin to gkrellm? It shows you practically everything about your hardware, I mean it shows FAN speed,
cPU temperature and many other features! But the difficulty is that it need lots of configs, kernel recompile etc. But the holydays are coming - 2 weeks! And mine ambitions are to install sensors! it would be cool

Yay! I got Opera 6.11, its great!
I tried LM_Sensors, it's a nightmare to get it to work, especially since my mother board isn't officialy supported, but people reported some tweaks to make them work. After much tweaking i did get it to work, well, to show only CPU temp, and after a while i figured it was reporting wrong CPU temperature.
So before you go messing with that, make sure your motherboard will work with it, or else i really don't think it's worth it, you'll know your comp. is too hot when it starts smoking anyway
Also check the above link again plz, cuz i tried it and it works, i don't see why it shouldn't work.
And plz send me an e-mail and i'll send you the style, then let me know if you like it.
Thanks!
-NSKL
my e-mail is: nautilus_1987@mail.ru or nautilus@ktv.lt
I am glad to hear that you've got pretty fonts in Opera now! And I think I won't try to install lm_sensors......because I have dislocatedf or broke my wrist . But I still can type with one hand!!! and it is hard to work in console, so now I will read read & read!
NSKL, maybe you know if xmms supports WMA format, or there is some plugin???
