Dropline GNOME nonroot audio

I've made a normal user account on my slackware install...

I've added that user to the audio, video , cdrom, gdm, users, and wheel groups.

But in GNOME, when I try to open volume control it tells me "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found."

Is there something I need to chown or chmod? thanks

Well that tells you that your sound device is all part of the group root, so....

chgrp (whatever your group name is) /dev/dsp*

or

chown 774 (or whatever you want the permission to be) /dev/dsp*

see if that does it for you.

hmmm... my situation is an odd one.

Using XMMS, I can produce audio using OSS output. Volume can be adjusted using alsamixer.

There are no devices listed under the ALSA output in XMMS, and the volume control in GNOME still tells me that there are no devices found.

Have you run alsaconf?

Code:
su

alsaconf
see if that will detect and setup the card.

I have the card working, I just don't seem to have access to it through ALSA on this user.

Here's my situation:

As root, all audio works.

as cry0x (my other user): GNOME Volume Control detects no card. XMMS lists no cards under the ALSA output menu. Sound CAN be played using OSS output, and controlling volumes with alsamixer (ironically)

edit: okay... wow... I've got no access to my GDM screensavers, tells me I don't have permissions. WTF is going on with my /etc/group file? I've added my user to the groups (video/audio), yet I have permissions for neither.
