I am really new to Linux and even more so to Slackware. I installed v12 sucessfully (I think) and logged into the system as ROOT. I am now sitting at the root prompt # .... How do I load the KDE desktop? Thanks!

easiest way is to type startx

but first you should add a non root user to login to for your safety.

adduser usernamehere

and just answer the questions, (password, etc use default for most)

then login to that user

You will probably want to configure X as well. Many tools exist such as xorgsetup, xorgconfig and xorgcfg. Some will require that you know more about your hardware than others. kde will probably run okay without doing this, but there will be a number of limitations (eg. resolution, acceleration).
