crontab in slackware

Hmm.. I realised that crontab is a bit different in Slackware. I say this because when I do crontab -e; it has entry inside saying hourly, daily, monthly etc.

So how do I make use of this?

Actually I want to do a few ping every 5 minutes and save the results in a log file. Yeah I know this is going to be huge. But I have a whole hdd for it (/var). So at least it won't crash my root.

I beleive that if you put this into your /var/spool cron/crontabs it will work.

Hello,

*/5 * * * * /name/of/command like a normal crontab command.

entry for hourly, daily, monthly etc in root crontab with "crontab -e" are entries like any others crontab command and you can append your own crontab commands at the end of the file without concern.
