convert tar.gz into .tgz

This is a pretty simple question, how do I convert *.tar.gz files to *.tgz files for packaged installation?

Not sure if you are just asking about extension changing or if there's more to it.

mv foo.tar.gz foo.tgz

I have already tried just changing the extension with rename and move, but changing the extension does not make it a valid tgz install package.

you would have to extract and compile it...

take a look at the SlackBuild scripts
or the checkinstall utility.

tar.gz is most commonly a source tar-ball. tgz is most commonly
as slackware binary tarball.

The "conversion" is a make && checkinstall or, if you prefer
that, use a SlackBuild script from Patrick as a template.

Cheers,
Tink
