connecting laptop to desktop using slack boot cd

Hey everyone,

My friend had a crash on her HP ZE5170 laptop, and I would like to get all of her data off of it before I reformat. However, this is very tough using Windows methods (plus the fact that I cannot stand using Windows at all anymore), and I know that I can get her stuff off using Linux. However, I don't really know....how. I've been using Linux for almost a year now, but very illiterate to Linux networking. I would like to use the Slackware boot CD (slackware-current from about 3 months ago) to login to her machine and mount the filesystem. How would I copy all her files to my machine using NICs in both machines (straight cables to a hub)? Would I need to add packages to the CD to enable PPP on her machine? Feedback would be appreciated.

By the way, I'm planning ahead for this. I actually can't do the project 'till this weekend.

~icy

Try knoppix

Hey:

I know this is a Slackware forum, and I use it, but sometimes a job calls for a different tool. You might want to consider Knoppix, it can do everything you want, and it is a '10' on the cool factor.
