Computer shuts down when trying to access vfat

Whenever I mount a VFAT partition the computer shuts down (mostly anyway...it powers down but I still have to hold the btton for 4 sec. before I can reboot it.)

Details:

Sony Viao PCF-F180 notebook 192MB RAM, 80GB Hard Drive.
/dev/hda9 is vfat for dual-boot to win98SE.
/dev/sda1 can be vfat for my 512MB usb microdrive (only usb device i'm talking about).

I can mount both. When I try to access sda1, it powers down. so I saved it to hda9 (worked fine) then I rebooted to windows. worked fine. properly shut down. went back to linux (slack 10.2 BTW), when it went to mount it and verify the drive, it powered down. It powers down everytime I try to access sda1. My computer was on for a couple of weeks straight working fine. I properly shut it down, took it with me to class and it has been acting up ever since.

It will occasionally drop to screensaver and power down and lock (like i described above) both in KDE and the console. But the only guarenteed way to get it to go nuts is to access a VFAT.

Suggestions?

It is a plain text file
try
Code:
most /var/log/syslog
(scrolling page)
or
Code:
tail /var/log/syslog
(shows the last lines)

This line :
Code:
Dec 8 20:33:59 HAL9000 kernel: uhci.c: fcc0: host controller halted. very bad
suggests me that you have issue with your usb port, hardware problem
or driver problem I don't know

I see your system log file (part a) that get filled with png images filenames, weird...
Also some ssh weird logs too, particulary :
Code:
Dec 4 11:45:21 HAL9000 sshd[2478]: error: Could not get shadow information for NOUSER
(part a)

"But what does it all mean, Basil?"

when I opened syslog in kate, it told me binary file error. I've have the host controller problem for a year, and it has never caused any pains. I had it in 10.1 as well. Never noticed (or looked for) it in knoppix, or system recovery disk (linux distro). that ssh thing... is it really necessary or can I live a full and normal life without ssh?

Sure, if you don't use ssh, disable it :
chmod -x /etc/rc.d/rc.sshd

Did you try to boot into runlevel #3 ?
From a terminal do telinit 3, then try a startx,
use your USB drive and see if the computer halt

ssh is a program to login remotely to another computer running sshd (the ssh daemon), it gives you a working terminal with the user you login with (it's like telnet if you've used it, but with encryption). It seems you've been running it and somebody is trying to get in using it.
For more information run: man ssh and/or man sshd
