my problem is this:
a few days ago i installed slackware 12, later followed by the new fglrx 8.42.4 and an attempted install-from-source of compiz and emerald. now, the desktop effects DO work, but very slow and im pretty sure the problem is due to this (the log of compiz-manager starting):
Code:
$ ./compiz-manager
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 1002:5b60 (prog-if 00

Trying again with indirect rendering:

Starting emerald
(lines that i believe are relative are bold)
if i remember right the texture_from_pixmap function is the cause that the fglrx drivers did not support aiglx for so long, but i installed the 8.42.4 version which IS supposed to support this function, and it is installed correctly (i think):
Being encouraged by the article on slashdot about the new ati driver I did the install too yesterday's evening, saw this issue you mention(but with one difference: compiz does not start up at all) and noticed that new driver works slower that opensource one, so I switched back to radeon driver.
My card is ati radeon mobility m10 9600.
Someone at slashdot said that for the full support, we have to wait even more. I still don't believe ATI, but belive they gave specifications to Novel and they'll develop a good OS driver for all times.
