color in X based terminals

I use both rxvt and xterm and I have encountered this problem in both;

when I log in as my user and startx, then I start doing some terminal operations, rxvt will not display colors, it just puts all the text output as unformated black text, but if I su to root and type ls, the directorys & will be nice and color coded.

it works opositely also, if I'm root and use a term the text is all the same, but if I su to my normal user and type ls, its all nice and color coded.

anyone know how to fix this?

If you type out in full the "ls -colour" option, does it work, or does it still display in black & white..?

I'm not sure which window manager you use, so I can't give you an exact solution. But you need to change the menu command that launches xterm or rxvt so it includes the '-ls' option. For example:

xterm -ls
or
rxvt -ls

This will launch xterm or rxvt as a 'login shell', which will give you the color formatting and aliases you are used to.

Enjoy!
