Chaning Screen Resolution

What utility and/or shell prompt tool can I use to reconfigure the screen resolution for my GUI desktop? Currently it is set to 640x480, and I would like to make it a higher setting. Thanks.

You can edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf by shell and add a new resolution or re-use "# xorgconfig" for recreate a new config-file.
I think there's a tool with kde but I haven't kde installed in my system.

Hi!

You can use "Control Center / Peripherals / Display" (when using KDE) to change the resolution and refresh rate.

Or you have to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Just put your desired resolution at first (there is one <Subsection "Display"> entry for each color depth):

Code:
# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************

Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection

You can also use Ctrl+Alt+numpad + or - to cycle resolutions.

Smile Hey I got a Q:

I noticed this thread and need the same advice.
I cant find xorg.conf and my peripherals dont list monitor, without using XF86Config, what is another way to change resolution?

I'll check my linux too...
Lokizen

Well, my kde panel got smaller, (i think) but the icons and webpages (and everything else)
are still too big!

Editing xorg.conf did not work

I have an NVidia FX5200 card in the box. I tried to edit the xorg.conf file and rebooted, but the 1280x1024 display setting refuses to show up in the KDE control panel. Any thoughts? Thanks.

my only thought is that is that maybe your system is not reading enough video card memory for the resolution you'd like.

I really dont know but it's a possibility...
