The first time I did that xorgcongif the monitor messed up. And the second time it went ok. My fps it root@dhcppc1:~# glxgears
5086 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1017.200 FPS
6541 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1308.200 FPS
6296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1259.200 FPS

right... You should let it run for atleast 25 seconds. It will stabilize at around 1240-1250... I'm convinced that it could run alot better than that tho. I'm not too worried about it tho. Like I say, I'm used to just a couple hundred on my old card... Well, enjoy!!
