You have to configure Xfree86 before you can use it.
On the www.slackware.org site you can find instructions on how to configure your Xserver.

check that you have installed all Xfree86 packages & that you have configured X correctly.

I have a geforce2 gts, and it works 'right out of the box'
Even when installing the 3D driver from Nvidia it works flawless.
just download the glx and kernelmodule and follow the instructions.

Try using "mc" (Midnight Commander) to edit your /etc/X11/XF86config manually. For some reason it never gets my screen resolution or mouse properties correctly.

hehe, u don't need to fool with that, if u havn't, enable usb in the kernel, then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config, go the then line:

# Identifier and driver

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
# The available mouse protocols types that you can set below are:
# Auto BusMouse GlidePoint GlidePointPS/2 IntelliMouse IMPS/2
# Logitech Microsoft MMHitTab MMSeries Mouseman MouseManPlusPS/2
# MouseSystems NetMousePS/2 NetScrollPS/2 OSMouse PS/2 SysMouse
# ThinkingMouse ThinkingMousePS/2 Xqueue
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
# Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
# Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping""4 5"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Device" "/dev/ttyS0"
# Option "Device" "/dev/ttyS1"
and comment out or uncomment it... thatz all u have to do

I had the same problem with 8.1. I got X to work
by running xfree86setup. Give it a try.
