can't mnt cdrom to install from /testing(solved)

I was trying a to install kernel 2.6.10 from testing following instructions from madpenguin but I can't mnt cdrom
Quote:
root@flebslack:~# cd /mnt/cdrom/testing/packages/linux-2.6.10
bash: cd: /mnt/cdrom/testing/packages/linux-2.6.10: No such file or directory
So i edited groups to make sure I had access
Quote:
lp::7:lp
mem::8:
kmem::9:
wheel::10:root,flebber
floppy::11:root
mail::12:mail
news::13:news
uucp::14:uucp
man::15:
audio::17:root,flebber
video::18:root,flebber
cdrom::19:root,flebber
I added root and myself to cdrom and user to wheel.

I then edited fstab because I have 2 cdroms well 1 i don't use CD-RW I use for everything it looked like this
Quote:
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 / reiserfs defaults 1 1
/dev/hda1 /fat-c ntfs ro 1 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy auto noauto,owner 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
So I inserted an extra line like this
Quote:
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom0 iso9660 noauto,owner,ro 0 0
but still no joy

Did you actually mount the CD-ROM first with "mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom"? You need to be root to do that.

You also get that error if the file isn't there at all:

Code:
root@lento:/tmp# installpkg foo.tgz
Cannot install foo.tgz: package does not end in .tgz
root@lento:/tmp#
So first check if that .tgz file is really in the directory you are in.

You don't need to reinstall GCC, as the .tgz files are pre-built packages and as such they don't need to be compiled.

But u might need cxxlibs for dynamically linked C++ binaries.
If you don't have gcc-g++ installed. (u might still need cxxlibs if u run an newer gcc-g++)

This may sound like a stupid question, but I'm noticing in the code you posted that you were in /root.... you did actually copy the file from /testing to that directory before trying to install it, right?

You can also grab slapt-get from linuxpackages.net if you need.
