Beagle on Slack10.2: Is it worth it?

I'd like a desktop searching tool, but after messing with Kat and finding it to be, well, a disaster, I'm wondering if Beagle is any better. Given the huge list of dependencies for Beagle, I'm a little hesitant to dive in. Has anyone gotten Beagle to work on 10.2 or current and could you do it without installing Gnome? If so, are there any pointers you could post?

I use the packages from Freerock Gnome. Beagle and its many dependencies can be found in extras/mono/ directory. The packages seem to work quite well and I installed them without installing gnome.

One drawback is that it takes up enough cpu cycles to keep my load above 20%, thus causing powernowd to kick up my cpu frequency. This is easily solved with nice. I also find that the Firefox beagle extension will sometimes go nuts and make Firefox seem to lock up. It became such a problem that I removed the extension.

It works pretty much as advertised. The gui frontend, Best, is not as configurable as I would like it to be. Although I haven't really messed with it much, I haven't been able to change the default apps that are used to open search results.

Regards,
Jacob

The latest Beagle version 0.2.1 is a huge improvment over the 0.1 series build that is available in the FRG release. The GUI frontend 'Best' has been deprecated and replaced with a vastly superior interface. You can build it yourself from source or just install the precompiled .tgz available at LP.

Many thanks for the tips. I hadn't thought of just grabbing the Freerock packages to solve the dependencies, but that is a good idea. I'll definitely try the 0.2.1 if it is a big improvment.
