auto switch off

a very basic function ... you "halt" and Slack winds down, but computer doesnīt actually switch off, i.e. "Power Off" is reported but computer stays running.

This only seems to happen to in Slack, with all of my 3 boxes. Donīt know where to start looking ... BIOS issue?

This feature or efect must be a standard SW-HW command because most OSes are able to it on all types of PCs.

Anybody any clues?

Sounds like you may need to load the apm module, if you are using a standard slackware kernel
Code:
modprobe apm
if this works then either find the line
Code:
#/sbin/modprobe apm
in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and uncomment it or if you can't find that line just add it in minus the hash at the beginning

thanks phil.d.g,
that did the job alright.

Might the kernel option "apm=power-off" have something to do with this also?

Sorry the best way to find this out is to un-insmod the module again and try it out! Ack! you know the usual laziness made me ask that!

Cheers

nope. dinna work. that kernel option I mean. Maybe it's a debian only type kernel option.

I feel it's a bit much to have a module hogging memory for the sole purpose off having a neat power-down.

You'd swear my config was optimised to bleeding edge condition - far from it! ... so I'll stick to putting apm as module.

cheers!

I think that if you install with the 'bare.acpi' option, you never run into that kind of problem.

If you compile your own kernels you could compile apm directly into the kernel
