Using Xfce 4.6.1

Audio worked fine until I rebooted.
Now, no audio at all.
I have run alsaconf, then alsamixer and lastly alsactl store
All applications ran without any indication of error and all indication
of success.
Still no audio. When I attempt to run mixer (as user) from the XFCE menu,
I get the following error popup:
Quote:
GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem.
and mixer fails to load.
If I attempt to run mixer from a console emulator, I get nothin
as user.
If I attempt to run mixer as root, I get this:
Quote:
<unknown program name>(13822)/: KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server
<unknown program name>(13821)/: KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.
Check that the user you are logging in as is in the audio group. Type "groups" on the command line to make sure "audio" shows up. If the sound doesn't work as root, then it is something else.
Don't rule out file system corruption due to bad disks and the like. You may end up having to reinstall those packages. I've had some weird unexplained stuff happen to me that turned out to be hard disk errors.
Kernel modules might not be loading.
Lastly, your sound card may have gone bad or needs to be reseated on the motherboard. I've had this too. And it was no end of trouble getting that one figured out.
I say some of these less likely things because it sounds like you've done your due diligence on the standard stuff.

Audio is there as a group.

How would I reinstall packages (pointers to docs and relevant discussions)?

And how to I check which modules have loaded?

There should also be a way to test the card directly?
(I suspect the OS, not the hardware, but I am a hardware dunce)

Hope this helps.
Well, this is a highly annoying happenstance but the analysis should thoroughly re-acquaint me with slack - I've returned
after some years ....
thanks very much.

Use a live distro to check your hardware and effect repairs... your favourite one thats all singing and dancing and you know works great on that box...

I would think it unlikely that you would need to do this but try out slackpkg just in case.

'lsmod | grep snd'

Rather than rely on gstreamer try to play a wav with 'aplay' and report errors here. You might also 'echo [somerandomcharacters] > /dev/dsp' and see if the speakers click.

Done as user `tim', permission is denied with no further messages.
Done as root, I definitely get clicks. So sound card is working?
Some permissions have gone awry?
Thank you.

Have you recently added yourself to audio group? If so you need to logout of X, all consoles, then log back in again.
I have not. It appears that root is the only member of that group.

I did, and the only response was:
Code:
Reloading system message bus configuration...
I.E. not obvious error messages.
Now when I invoke 'kmix' as user from a console I get a blank window,
but not the error message. Same errors tho' when invoked as root
or from the XFCE menu.
