atkbd driver issues

Hi, I recompiled my kernel, and even though atkbd is set enabled my kernel refreses to tell me what keys are being pressed, I need to know this to set up a keyboard that has some keys that arent mapped yet, now I looked in /proc/bus/input/devices and its pointing is the right spot, yet I still see no debug messages what gives? this is for a PS/2 keyboard
what gives, this is my 5th kernel recompile today and it is now allowing me to see the debug messges, I looked in /var/log/messages and /var/log/desmsg and nothing

Can someone help me out?
