ATI - r128 xorg server
Hello,
I just signed up for LQ.
I installed Slack 12.1 on my box about a month ago.
I've run the very slow default X config. Last night
in a fit of caffeine and enthusiasm I edited my xorg.conf
and get my X running as it should be.
I copied xorg.conf to original.xorg.conf
then I ran xorgconfig.
To get the Horizrefresh and Vertrefresh I referred
to the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log. This had scanned
and found my monitors capacities.
So the xorgconfig worked well. I used the ATI - r128 selection
for xserver. I have an old ATI Rage Pro.
After the script created a different xorg.conf files I
startx'd and KDE came up.
I compared the two logs: diff Xorg.0.log Xorg.0.log.old
and was able to see a bunch of good changes.
In looking at my new log there were some gaffes so I
went back and hand edited my new xorg.conf file.
I add two options:
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Rage Pro"
Driver "r128"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
Option "Display" "CRT"
#VideoRam 32768
# Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
EndSection
I diff'ed the logs again and saw the these options worked.
So the X server and KDE all look and feel a hundred times better.
I have 1280x1024 resolution, and DRI.
In my Xorg.0.log there are still two warning messages I haven't been
able to figure out. Any ideas?
One is:
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
The other is:
(WW) R128(0): Can't determine panel dimensions, and none specified.
Disabling programming of FP registers.
This was another pleasant Slack experience.
