Archive :: TAR :: How do I recompile to allow large files?

Using a different distro on the same machine I created a few .tar files over 3 gigs each.
Now on my slackware distro when I try to open or send those files over an ftp client I recieve this err message:

Code:
Value too large for defined data type
How do I recompile so that I can do away with this error.

I would have made tar use multiple volumes, creating files greater than 2GB may cause you problems in many places.

Must be running an older version of tar or Slack. I have tar files over 7 gig without issue. Need more detail on your Slackware box.

Sounds more like the OP is trying to put them on a filesystem that doesn't support large files, OR maybe the ftp server doesn't support large files.
