Apps to download

I was wondering if anyone could suggest any decent apps to DL for a new Slack 8.1 box. I am looking to make it both router and server for my home domain. As of right now, it is neither router nor server, but that is a whole other thread. Since it isn't on the net, or on my network, I am reduced to burning cds to transfer files. Thanks in advance from an Uber Newbie.

Hmmm, I'd say if it's just gonna be a server box you wouldn't want alot of miscelanous apps, just your server apps such as ProFTPD which comes on your Slack install discs, apache, which does as well. Um, also for email I suggest checkin out postfix, it seems to be a much better replacement for sendmail, and it's sendmail-compatible, so don't have to worry about that.

Anyway, to get slack packs, check out www.linuxpackages.net

Cool

This is off a small home network (3-4 comps max), and it isn't going to be a server for quite a while at the rate this is working. It is also going to end up being my only box, so I can get away from windows finally completely. Thanks!

These might help then, it is good to read them even if you dont want to follow them step by step since they really do close your box a lot, thus making it more secure, but less practical to use. So read them, and apply only the things you see fit.

Also, being a server box (and your only linux box?) you might want a small browser on there, just in case. I'd say not to be running X, it will just take up a lot of un-necessary room on something like a server (however I am slightly confused by your reply, will this be both a server and a workstation?) so stick with either lynx or links, and I'd say links for starters.

Webmin as well might be something to look into, but then you would be adding X. Not that adding X would be a huge ordeal, it just would be overkill and a half on a server box. If you do put X on there, get a very light wm, not KDE/Gnome, something much lighter. I really try not to suggest wm's because it sometimes starts a flame fest, or suggestion fest for wm's which is overdone quite a bit on here. However, just to give you an idea of something to look at, check out http://fluxbox.sf.net They have slackpacks available if you choose.

For security, I don't know anything better than demarc's puresecure, it does require MySQL, Apache, and (something else that I can't think of right now...) but you can choose to download them during the install, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

Good Luck

Without totally going off on a tangent, I have 2 WinNT computers in a workgroup. I plan on adding my Slackbox to the network, using samba (if it ever works), and sharing my PPP connection off of it. If I can find I can do everything and more off the Slackbox like I think I can, I will be losing one of the WinNT boxes in favor of the Slackbox, so, in essence, it will be my workstation. Since samba sets it up as a server, and I haven't found a way to JUST add it to the workgroup, it will be both a server (though only for file and internet sharing), and my workstation. Nothing to intensive, at least not that I am planning for right now. Whew...now I need a breather
