APM in kernel recompile

My laptop doesn't power down on it's own right now. I see that APM was configured into my kernel as a module. How would i enable the module that controls APM?

I'm about to recompile my kernel and am wondering if configuring APM into the kernel would make my laptop power down by itself?

I have a 6+ yr. old AMD K-6 350 MHz Compaq laptop with Slack 10.

Do you have apm enabled? There's a boot flag to do it -

append="apm=on"

Also, this page looks like it contains all of the kernel flags that are used for enabling and disabling specific functions of apm, which might be useful for you when you recompile.

you can just type " #modprobe apm " to try if it works.
if so, uncomment that line in rc.modules.
