Another sound question

My sound seems to work fine after install, only problem is that slack uses my onboard via sound instead of the prefered SB live. I've been reading true the post here on sound but most concern sound not working and that's not the thing. Is there a way tot let Slack use SB instead of the build in one? I' ve tried to alter the I/O in soundconfig but nothing works. Setting it to ALSA (it's now on auto) gives my this error:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (Permission denied)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

And that leaves me with the onboard. So, I'm not sure if the SB does work or that my only option is the via. Any ideas?

Regards

Some more info. I did run alsaconf and it sees my sb (aswell as the via) when I try to configure the sb all goes fine. Alsaconf edits te modules.conf but still no sound true the sb. If I modprobe emu10k1 I get the following:

root@Slackware:~# modprobe emu10k1
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz: init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz failed
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o.gz: insmod emu10k1 failed

It's modprobe snd-emu10k1 for the ALSA driver...and make sure it's not muted.

weird, if I do modprobe snd-emu10k1 I just get nothing. Sound still plays true the via, setting the config to alsa gives me the above error....
I know I can use the via, but that would be to easy right

(ALSA page)

Module option name change after 0.9.0rc3
========================================

Note that module option names were changed in 0.9.0rc4. The 'snd_' prefix
was removed. You may use script in utils directory (module-options) to
convert your older /etc/modules.conf to newer one.

This might have to do with it........

you could always disable your onboard sound in your BIOS. However, alsa is able to handle multiple cards, but that will require you to read up on alsa some to control them.
