Post Another Laptop about to loose virginity to Slackware64 -current

Hi,

Just got a new toy!

Quote:
Compaq/HP CQ60-615DX Notebook @Best Buy $369.00

Intel Celeron 900 (2.2Ghz)
250GB(7200rpm) HDD
2GB DDR2 SDRAM
8x DVD +/- R/RW Double layer
Win7 Home Premium (for the time being)

15.6" diagonal Widescreen display
Intel GMA 4500M Graphics
802.11 b/g/n WLAN
6 cell Lithium ion battery
Plus a lot of useless software
I'm about to put this baby through the wringer. I just downloaded 'Slackware64 -current', 'UBCD' and 'SystemRescueCD' to get things rolling for the new install.

I'll use the M$ tools to defragment and re-size that speedy drive. I really look forward to the headaches in setting this baby up. Just love the HP keyboard feel. Big! For a notebook these mitts really do need some space. I've got this Notebook setup on a laptop stand in the rec room with a big screen watching the Fox News coverage of the health-care bill. Now that's some noise.

I can't wait for the B'ball to start in a half hour.

I don't expect to much trouble with the 'Slackware64 -current' install but you never know anymore. I'll boot the install DVD to see what's recognized. Then use that boot to garner all the necessary hardware information.

As a lot of you know that I will link within my posts but since this baby is virgin except for FF. I haven't even imported bookmarks let alone 'SlackwareŽ-Links' or even personal links on the toolbar.

I will keep Win7 for clients as this will be another laptop for that usage plus wanting to have a decent laptop for the rec room to do that style of work. Cheap way to service M$ clients without buying more personal license(s). So far no big deal with M$ Win7 but I need to have that pathway available to me.

My reason to buy this notebook rather then a netbook should be obvious, big enough for me to do what is necessary. I've got test beds to do the real work, netbooks just won't meet the needs as describe above. I purchased a Netbook for my wife. That one will be used while she's away to aid with the new Grandchild, a lot easier to carry than her old HP Laptop. If the Netbook is lost then no worry since it's cheaper than her HP.

I would appreciate any heads up for potential unforeseen problems for this Slackware64 install. Gathering loads of information to aid in the build but the brain has been overloaded lately with too many tasks.

BTW, posting from it now!

Hi,

Just finished moving/re-sizing the Win7 partitions. I noticed on re-boot that Win 7 does a chkdsk to verify the validity. No harm since I kept the ntfs & recovery partitions contiguous.

I decided to use 'SystemRescueCD' with Gparted instead of the M$ tools. Just to see what happens. So far so good.

Created all my GNU Linux partitions and now prepared to start the install.
It will have to wait, Grandkids are here to spend the night.

I'll start things when we get back down stairs.

Sounds good, onebuck! So what DE are you going to run on your new -current laptop?

Hi,

I'm on it now.

Testing KDE for now.

This was a speed setup. The install went quick for a full. About 16 minutes, my key entry was slow since I'm still getting used to this new keyboard.

I have to work out some problems with the disk tables but minor. I'm using the install DVD to boot. One other thing is the wireless indicator flashes intermittently on and off. I'll check the AP, linking through a sub floor and ceiling grid. There's another AP on this level so I'll make that move later if that's the problem.

'X' came up without configuration. Polish the fonts and things later.

Overall I'm impressed with Slackware64 -current, the boot seems crisp.

It's hard to work on things now with all the B'ball. 'NIU' has got Kansas on it's heels.
