An interesting soundcard problem

Hi everyone,

I have a weird/interesting soundcard problem.
First off, it's a soundblaster audigy.
So its not some weird, unknown soundcard.

Slackware seems to be the only distribution that will detect my soundcard.
However when I recompile my kernel, I get the same problem always. It doesn't detect it. I've tried other distributions: mandrake, debian, ... and get the same problem as when I try to recompile the kernel myself.

A general error I get from other distributions and my recompiles (in slack) is something along the lines of "can't assign irq, possibly buggy MP table"
(this error I get from dmesg)

However when I run 'lspci' the card is there.

So, in short, the slackware kernels are the only kernels I have found that will run work with my soundcard. (Note: when I say slackware kernels, I'm referring to the default kernels that come from slackware9.1 and 10.0)

Now here comes the real mest up part. I have tried (a couple of times) to use
the exact configuration file that comes with the default slackware kernels to recompile the same version of the kernel.
Result: Same soundcard error.

Now all this leads me to one conclusion, that is slackware kernels must be patched or something.

Is there a way to find out what patches, are applied to the default kernels?

Any input/help would be greatly appreciated.
There's really nothing wrong with my using the original kernel, but, you know, I just want to be able to run my own compiled version. Its a geek thing I guess.

Thanks!

You probably still have the alsa-driver package installed, which is compile specific. So if you compile in alsa, or make a different alsa module, they compete with each other.
I remove the alsa-driver package all together and staticly compile the alsa driver for my soundcard into the kernel.

No, I've tried that.
And,
This error comes in right at the start of boot time. before alsa is even considered.
