Did you ever get this to work? I don't think anyone thought to ask you this, but are you trying to use the KDE sound system (arts) instead of alsa? I think arts is broken in KDE 3.5+. Try using a media player that does not depend on arts and disable the KDE sound system in the control panel. Alsa is less buggy and less CPU intensive then alsa anyways so it's no big loss. I am curious why it's broken though, so I will look into it further.
